Neurofeedback is Like a Workout for Your Brain

Stress, over-arousal, poor nutrition, lack of physical exercise, injury, and toxic substances cause the brain to dysregulate, leading to undesirable issues. Neurofeedback training enables a person to alter their brain waves, teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthy way.

It’s like exercise for the brain, where a sensor will monitor brain waves and output this information to a neurofeedback computer system. This system measures brain waves and teaches the brain to make healthier patterns by rewarding it when more regulated patterns are created. Once these healthier brain patterns are practiced and learned, the effects of neurofeedback tend to hold. It can complement psychotherapy and mindfulness practices as a holistic approach to healing and wellness.

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

  • Sensor Placement

A sensor is placed on the scalp over the region of interest.

  • Computer Feedback

A computer program is set to provide auditory and/or visual feedback whenever it receives desired wave activity.

  • Brain Regulation

After repeatedly receiving feedback, the brain will reproduce this activity, even when not in session.

Types of Neurofeedback

At Aligned Neurofeedback we take a brain map before beginning treatment via a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG). This allows us to visualize areas of potential dysregulation and direct the course of treatment in conjunction with reported clinical symptoms. This will influence the type of neurofeedback treatment provided to best suit the individual needs of the client.

What to Expect

We recommend starting with at least two one-hour training sessions per week during the first month of treatment. Neurofeedback relies on operant conditioning to train the brain, so frequent sessions are crucial for effective learning and long-lasting results. Having sessions close together helps consolidate learning, making the benefits of neurofeedback more enduring.

Typically, therapy involves 20 to 40 sessions, though the exact number depends on how well you respond to treatment and the complexity of your symptoms.

A common treatment plan might include:

  • 2 sessions per week for the first 3 to 4 weeks

  • 1 session per week for the following 6 to 8 weeks

  • Every other week for several months thereafter

While some clients may notice subtle improvements after the initial session, more dramatic improvement usually begins after about 4 sessions, with lasting effects often becoming evident after an additional 10 to 30 sessions.

Pricing

The fee for an initial qEEG (brain map) is $300.  This allows us to capture brainwave activity at different regions of the brain, to fully comprehend what neurofeedback protocols are best to use.

The fee for each neurofeedback session (following the qEEG) is $100.  These are the sessions in which the brain training takes place.

Pre-paid session bundle discounts are available upon request.

Although research supports the efficacy of neurofeedback, health insurance is still behind on the curve. We aim to provide the most affordable prices in the Central Ohio region, as we believe in making mental health services more accessible to all individuals.
